A week after he was arrested on suspicion of having conversations of a sexually-explicit nature with someone who presented himself as a teenager, the teacher from the center of Haaretz responds to the suspicions against him. In the first interview, he says he was convinced it was an adult. “I looked at the things written about me and said to myself, what is this monster? It can’t be me,” he said.
Everything attributed to me is not me” – this is what the teacher Doron Kamlof said in a special interview with News 2; he tried to explain the recordings of the blatant conversations with offensive sexual content that he had with someone who introduced himself as a 14-year-old boy. “I looked at what they wrote about me and asked myself, what is this monster? It can’t be me.”
In a conversation published last week for the first time on News 2 online, the teacher is heard asking the “boy” his age. The boy, played by Avi Dubitzky, replied that he was 14 years and three months old. The teacher was even asked if he could get into trouble in Israel if he met him, and he responded by saying: “If it’s okay with you, and we both keep it a secret, that’s okay, but I have to trust you.”
“I didn’t think I was talking to a 14-year-old boy, that’s for sure not,” he clarified, “I heard him, and he sounded mature. When he said he was 14, I said no, I’m not dating, and everything else was just some kind of game, some role-playing game, that’s what I thought. I didn’t think that I was going to harass someone or a child sexually; that’s something that would be inconceivable.”
The teacher continued and tried to explain his actions: “It can sound to someone straight, strange, deviant, sick, I don’t know what to call it. But these are routine things for us; we are sexually open in conversations; that’s how it is in our community.”
The conversations were recorded by Avi Dubitzky, who works to catch sex offenders online. When the teacher was asked about the meeting he arranged with him, a meeting he arrived at equipped with sex accessories, he said: “There is a twist to things. I told him I would not meet him, but as soon as I told him we would meet, I realized he was not 14 years old; he was not who he was. I made it clear If only there were nothing sexual in the meeting.”
Attorney Daniel Haklai, the teacher’s lawyer, denies the suspicions against his client: “The bottom line was that he was convinced that it was an adult, and when he suspected that it was a minor, he made it clear that he was not ready for any sexual contact. This is not a pedophile but a very normative teacher; I am convinced the case will be closed, and no indictment will be filed.”
